Compost Corner
Phillip Blackman from Merevale Estate gave permission for the use of some of the land next to the JLR site and the Bowls Club to be used as a compost area and a grant of £1799 was made by the Community Fund.
On 13th June a small digger arrived from Merevale Estate to clear undergrowth from the area. It was thought that it would get down to bare soil but it soon became clear there was some brickwork and this turned out to be quite a large brick floor.
When Claire and Jonothan Bowen, John Stevens and Jim Pearson went to clear the remaining debris a couple of days later there was an area sufficient for the compost area and approval was given to change the plan to incorporate the brick floor. It turns out that this was where the first aid van (ambulance?) was parked when the pit was in operation.
Atherstone Fencing and Tree Services were contracted to erect a fence around the area and this was done on 16th July with a shed being installed on 17th August. John gave the shed a protective coat of preserver and built bins for the compost and on 22nd October guttering and water butts were installed to help with watering plants in the coming years. Finally shelves were built in the shed and pots etc that had been cluttering up a garage had somewhere to live.
